“Red Dragon two day cruise- an excellent trip”

Took the one night/two day cruise of Halong Bay on the Red Dragon 2. It is a unique experience on a spacious and comfortable vessel that is based on an old time junk. The cabins are very comfortable, with ensuite,a nd air conditioning. The stops on the cruising itinerary, for kayaking and visiting a floating village, are well worth while. the crew is extremely courteous, with some of the best food we have tasted coming out of the very small galley on the vessel for every meal.
A couple of days of peace and quiet on the boat with no mobile phones or internet. Bliss!!

    “Great dragon, clean bay”

Me and my partner spent for ever reading reviews trying to avoid the various scams around touring Ha Long bay and finally we chose The red dragon by Indochina Junks ( not to be confused with Indochina Sails). We decided for this company because it is the only one that sails on batu bay where the waters are crustal clean and you only ever see up to 13 boats maximum as oppose to 600 plus at Ha Long Bay.

we booked through the office of Crossing Vietnam Travel, situated at the old quarter in Hanoi as recommended by a lot of travellers and lonely planet and we weren’t disappointed. The staff were friendly, knowledgable and never pushy.

Our 4 hour journey to the bay, was in a spacious and very comfortable bus with a good and safe driver. Now having spend almost 2 weeks in Vietnam we got a pretty good idea of how different Vietnamese driving is in comparison to the UK. So for 4 hours each way we felt safe and not stressed in the vehicle every time our bus would overtake a truck.

The boat was very clean, the showers had hot water, beautiful linen, a really nice upper deck and sitting area. We had a bit if a problem with our toilet flush but all else was great. The staff were very attentative and friendly. The food was delicious. We were asked before boarding if we had any special dietary requirements so if you are not keen on crap and lots of fresh sea food speak up.The programme was followed strictly so we visited a cave, we had a great kayaking session in a beautiful beach and time to enjoy swimming. We even practiced squid fishing and failed. The following day we visited a floating village for 2hours and that was very interesting and informative. We were only 5 people on the boat that can normally accommodate 10 so we were spoiled rotten by our guide.

We were blessed withh fantastic weather so our trip was a bliss. A visit to ha long bay is something I have been dream of for a long time and naturally I was prepared for dissappoinment. However, the natural beauty of the bay was so much better than in the photos. The only sad thing was that we wanted to do a 2 night trip but it was sold out so we ended up compromising with the 1night trip instead. Next time we will book a bit in advance and enjoy the bay for longer.Just to save you a bit of time regardless of what company you choose to go with here is a list of things to consider:

Ha long bay sometimes has bad weather and as a result trips get cancelled. Please check if you are entitled to a full refund if that’s the case,Ask specifically not just the company name but also which boat you will be travelling with and how many people it can accommodate
Check what time is the boat returning on your last day as some return as early as 10
confirm kayaking is included in the price
Same good for water and coffee/tea
Check how far off the beaten track it sails. A lot of people report dirty water that was covered in rubbish and oil. Not suitable for swimming
    Have fun!

“Red Dragon was worth the reserch and cost”

My partner and I did a lot of research about The Red Dragon amidst the numerous other tours and decided to go on that boat or another that was from the Indochina Sails company. We were aided in this decision from someone staying in our hotel who had just come off a tour with them.We booked our trip via Crossing Vietnam Travel who were a great agent and offered us impartial, and great service too.
Initially we wanted to do 3 days and 2 nights, but The Prince was full so we had to settle for 2 days 1 night as the other tour that had spaces went around Halong Bay and was a lot more commercial and touristy.Red Dragon goes outside of Halong and goes to more secluded, cleaner and out of the way spots. Our cruise was quiet too, only us and a family of 3 from Singapore. They were lovely and a pleasure to be on the cruise with. Our tour guide was very professional and friendly and was good at showing us things as well as giving us space to appreciate and enjoy things for ourselves. The food on board was plentiful to say the least. Every meal felt like a banquet and the cabins were clean and spacious.

Next time i will prefer to book a trip with them direct as that would mean a direct pick up from our hotel, but after one cruise with them it has made me wanting to go on more cruises with them.

The crew on board the ship were so attentive, friendly and wonderful to be around and this experience has become a magical one and one of the highlights of my trip to Vietnam.
